Details on this recall are subject to change. We will update this article as often as necessary to reflect the correct information.
Diono has issued a recall for some Radian, Olympia, Pacifica, and Rainier car seats made between 2013 and 2017. When installed with the vehicle lap belt only, these seats may not perform properly in a crash. Diono will send out a new chest clip and energy absorbing pad with instructions on how to replace them.
From the recall notice: “Owners of car seats impacted by this recall will be offered a free kit with updated instruction manual, labels, an energy absorbing pad to be used in the harness mode for type 1 (lap belt only) installations up to 65 pounds, and a new IMMI chest clip.”
Since the top tether is a crucial piece of safety equipment on any forward facing car seat, situations that are impacted by this particular recall should be few and far between. The recall does not state specifically that the recall impacts forward facing only installations, though the part of the FMVSS regulation referenced (FMVSS 213 S5.1.3.1.a.1) does only apply to: “Child restraint systems other than rear-facing ones and car beds.”
Recall Kit
The Recall Kits are being shipped from Stericycle. The boxes appear fairly innocuous so don’t be surprised if you receive a box that looks like this. It’s your Diono Recall Kit.
The Recall Kit includes a fairly substantial foam pad, an updated chest clip, a new warning label, and instructions.
More About the Foam Pad
The foam pad is about 2.5 inches thick. It installs on top of the existing cover.
The crotch buckle slides through the slots in the foam. Be sure to align the crotch buckle in the foam pad with the crotch buckle position that’s in use on the car seat — in other words, if the crotch buckle is in the middle position on the car seat itself, thread it through the middle position in the foam pad.
Chest Clip Replacement
The kit also includes a replacement chest clip and instructions on how to swap it out.
Label Replacement
In addition, the recall kit includes an updated label and instructions on where to place it.
Full Text of the Recall
Diono is recalling certain Radian R100, Radian R120, Radian RXT, Olympia, Pacifica, and Rainier convertible + booster car seats. When the seat is secured to the car using the lap belt without also using the top tether, the seat may not adequately protect the child from injury in the event of a crash. As such, these child seats fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 213, “Child Restraint Systems.”
Remedy
Diono will notify owners, and provide a free remedy kit with an updated instruction manual, an energy absorbing pad, as well as a new chest clip, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 22, 2017. Owners may contact Diono customer service at 1-855-463-4666.
