Adjust Your Car Seat’s Recline with a Pool Noodle or Rolled Towel

Sometimes, a car seat needs to be reclined just a bit more than the vehicle seems to allow, even with the recline angle adjuster extended all the way.

Many car seats that have a rear facing mode allow the use of a pool noodle or tightly rolled towel in the seat bight so the car seat can be installed at the right angle, especially for a newborn.

Here’s how it should look. We suggest cutting the noodle into three 11″ pieces so they will fit in between the LATCH anchors. You can use one noodle or 3 in a triangle, depending on the size and shape that’s needed.

You can also use a rolled towel take up the space. Roll the towel as tightly as you can, then tuck it into the seat bight before setting the car seat on the vehicle seat.
While most rear facing only, convertible, and multimode car seats allow for this, confirm this in the car seat’s manual before installing the seat with a towel or pool noodle.
