The Cozywoggle: Car Seat Friendly Jacket for your Littles

Winter can be tough! Getting your Littles from the house to the car without getting too cold can be such a challenge. Bulky winter coats keep those kiddos warm but they present a safety risk when worn in the car. One option that keeps Littles warm and safe at the same time is the Cozywoggle. We’d heard so many great things about this product, we couldn’t wait to try one on our own Littles!

The Cozywoggle is touted as the first “car seat friendly” coat. It has some standard features: pockets and a hood that unzips from the body.  Where the Cozywoggle differs from regular coats is the zipper on the sides. This allows the back of the coat to go behind the child’s head instead of behind the child’s back, so the Cozywoggle doesn’t interfere with the harness on the child’s car seat. There’s a zipper on each side that allows the Cozywoggle to open from the bottom of the coat to the end of the sleeves.

The Cozywoggle

When fully zipped up, the Cozywoggle looks and functions like a regular kid’s coat. The outside is heavy-duty wind/water resistant polyester, the lining has fleece in the body and hood of the coat. The Cozywoggle is available in sizes 12 months, 18 months, 2T, 3T, 4, 5, and 6. It comes in 4 fun colors: gray/orange, blue/yellow, purple, and green. We received a size 3T coat in purple from Cozywoggle for this review.

The Cozywoggle is extremely well made. The quality compares to a high-quality coat you’d find at any major retailer. The outer material is smooth and water/wind resistant and the inner fleece is very soft. The fleece-lined body kept my Littles roasty toasty. The velcro tabs on the ends of each zipper on the sides add a nicely finished look to the coat.

This model is 3 and a half years old.  She she weighs about 29 pounds and is about 37 inches tall and usually wears a 3T in clothing.  She’s a little small for her age, but good things come in small packages. The 3T coat runs true to size. and it fits her well. She loves the penguin embroidery on the side, and says that the color is the best. Stylish and comfortable, kiddo approved!

Converting the Cozywoggle

The first few times I used the Cozywoggle for a child riding in a car seat, it was a little awkward. It may take some time to get used to, but once you’ve done it a few times, converting the Cozywoggle for use in a car seat becomes pretty easy. Here’s how:

First, undo the side zippers like this:

Now that the side of the coat is open, slide the child’s arms out of the sleeves to gain access to the car seat’s harness.

Then flip the back of the coat up behind the child’s head.

After that, adjust the harness under the front part of the coat. Then put the front of the coat back down to cover the child’s lap.

The arms of the coat can remain unzipped.  In this case, the Cozywoggle will act like a poncho of sorts. They can also be zipped back up toward the child’s armpit so your child’s arms stay warm in the coat’s sleeves.

Our model liked having the sleeves unzipped, but here’s a photo of how she looks with the sleeves zipped up. The Cozywoggle covers almost her entire lap, and her legs are nicely crossed under it.

She’s the one who always needs a blanket in the car, even when it’s warmer out, but I think she’ll be snug as a bug in her Cozywoggle and won’t require a blanket anymore.

This coat doesn’t interfere with the harness because it doesn’t go behind our little or under the straps. It simply goes over. The unique zippers on the sizes make this transition pretty easy, once you get used to it. I really do like the way this coat works in the vehicle.

Small Hesitations, Easily Dismissed!

We had two small concerns about using the Cozywoggle. First, we wondered if the coat could, in some car seats push some children’s heads forward a little. Because this coat is sized for children older than 12 months+, a group that generally has good head control, we didn’t find this too much of an issue.

Our second concern was price.  The Cozywoggle’s retail price is $59.99.  This may be a bit steep for some families. However, many good quality winter coats are similarly priced.
