Transport Canada wishes to inform the public that certain Snugli/Embrace 35 (within the model numbers listed above) car seats may have an installation diagram label that incorrectly shows the position of the carry handle when the restraint is installed in the vehicle. In Canada, the handle should be in Position 1 for travel, and the incorrect label shows the handle in Position 4.
It should be noted that the user guide as well as another label on the product (hidden from view when the car seat is installed in the base) correctly instructs consumers on using the correct carry handle position (shown in figures 1 and 2, below).
Transport Canada is concerned that some consumers may incorrectly position the carry handle when installing the restraint in their vehicle, which could put the child occupant at a higher risk of injury in the event of a vehicle collision. There is no safety risk if the carry handle is used in the correct position (Position 1).
Evenflo had previously corrected the labeling issue on all product manufactured following January 21, 2015; however, will not be correcting the issue on product manufactured prior to that date. Evenflo is notifying all registered Canadian consumers of affected models about this labeling inaccuracy.
TC has opted to advise consumers of this non-compliance as the Department is concerned that they may be unknowingly misusing the car seat.
To date, there have been no reported cases of injuries related to the incorrect positioning of the carry handle.
Parents and caregivers can continue to use the seats safely, provided they follow the instructions in the user guide and the label that is hidden from view when the restraint is installed in the base (shown in Figure 3, below). Consumers should ONLY use Position 1 when installing their restraint in a vehicle.
Consumers should disregard the label shown in Figure 4 on how to position the carry handle. Consumers who have the correct label (as shown in Figure 5, below) may disregard this notice.
If parents or consumers have lost or misplaced their user guide, they should contact Evenflo at 1-937-773-3971 to receive a replacement. The affected restraint systems should not be returned to the retailer.
