We got our first look at the new Nuna Myti at the Kind und Jugend trade show back in September, but now can share even more info about this new harness to booster (aka combination car seat for our friends from the United States) car seat with our readers!
Nuna invited us down to their offices here in the Netherlands to get hands-on with this exciting new combination seat, so here’s a sneak peek of what the Myti has to offer.
The Myti is the first R129 (commonly referred to as i-Size) compliant harness to booster seat on the market. The Myti’s height range is 76 cm to 105 cm, and the maximum child weight is 19.5 kg. There is no minimum weight for using the harness, but we recommend that all children stay rear facing until a minimum of age 2. After the child is 105 cm tall or weighs 19.5 kg, the Myti converts to a high back booster seat with a maximum child height of 150 cm.
Installation: ISOFIX Only
The Myti is installed with ISOFIX and top tether, and like most ISOFIX installs it’s pretty straightforward. There’s no load leg to worry about with a forward facing seat like this, so just pop the ISOFIX arms onto the ISOFIX anchors, attach the top tether and remove the slack from the top tether webbing, and off you go!
No Rethread Harness
A handle at the back raises and lowers the headrest and harness. As the headrest is raised, the shoulder wings of the seat also expand to accommodate bigger kids. I love the little details like the chunky belt guides with spring-loaded “gates” to ensure the vehicle seat belt doesn’t slip out.
Soft Goods
The fabrics are soft, and the seat back has mesh to help keep kids cooler — my son always complains about being hot in his seat, so the mesh is a welcome addition! In addition to the harness neck pads there are also hip and crotch pads for added comfort. An additional body insert offers more padding for smaller kids as well.
Recline
One really nice feature is that the seat can be reclined on the go in both harness and booster mode. The top tether doesn’t need to be adjusted after reclining the seat, so it’s easy to make it a bit comfier for kids to nap while you’re out and about.
Converting to Booster Mode
When it’s time to switch to booster mode, the harness and crotch buckle store neatly in the seat. The harness storage on the Myti is extremely easy to use and fit the harness in — no fussing about with tiny awkward storage compartments or buckles that don’t want to stay put!
Fit to Child: Sneak Peek
I tried my son in the seat to see how it fit. He’s 6 years old, about 112 cm tall, and weighs 18 kg. While he fit in the harness by weight and by harness height, he’s outgrown it due to the standing height limit of 105 cm. This is the biggest downside of R129 — lots of kids need to stay in a harness past 105 cm, so having such a low height limit is disappointing. This is a problem with the specification, though, not with the seat itself. All R129 harnessed seats are currently limited to 105 cm.
Booster Mode
Next I tried him in booster mode. The vehicle seat belt fit was pretty good, though he was slouching a bit because the testing rig was a bit precarious for him. The lap belt was over his pelvis, and the shoulder belt fit snugly over his collarbone. Since we were only able to test the Myti on the demo seat he didn’t have a chance to buckle himself in but the Myti is narrow enough at the bottom that I don’t foresee any issues.
The great thing about R129 is that it requires more stringent testing of seats. This is fabulous for making sure kiddos are safely restrained, even in side impacts. We love having our kids safer!
Right now, the Myti is unique as the only seat that is i-Size compliant as both a harnessed seat and a booster. It would be a great long lasting option for kids over age 2 who will stay under 105 cm until they’re ready for a booster. And as one of only a few i-Size boosters on the market, it offers a great level of protection.
The Myti is being released now, so check it out if you’re in the market for an i-Size seat with longevity. And we offer a big thank you to Nuna for inviting us out for this fun sneak peek!
