The Issue
Chicco has issued a recall for MyFit Zip Air car seats (model numbers 07079561970070 and 04079561190070.) In certain configurations, the seat may allow excessive chest movement in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Details
The MyFit Zip Air is a model featuring a unique zip-off 3D AirMesh cover and Kid Console cupholder accessory. Chicco has clarified that this recall only applies to seats that are installed/used with ALL 4 of the following criteria:
Installed with a lap only vehicle seat belt
AND
Installed without the top tether
AND
Installed on recline positions 3 or 4 (most upright)
AND
Used by a child weighing between 24-40 pounds
Note: This recall does not apply to installations where the top tether + a lap/shoulder belt are used.
What is a Lap Only Vehicle Seat Belt?
Since September 1, 2007, all new cars sold in the U.S. require a lap/shoulder belt in the center rear seat. Vehicles manufactured in prior years may have a lap only seat belt – a belt that only goes across the lap. Learn more about types of vehicle seat belts.
The Remedy
The official remedy is under development.
For now, install the MyFit Zip Air car seat with the top tether when available. For additional clarification, please contact Chicco or reference your car seat manual.
