The Issue

Health Canada has determined that the use of “Child Secure Seatbelt Vests” and “Toddler Child Car Booster Seats” in a motor vehicle could increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision. 

These products have been around for some time. They masquerade as actual safety devices but they do not meet any federal safety standards in the United States or Canada.

We’re loathe to admit that these products even exist but are pleased to see that HealthCanada is joining NHTSA in issuing a recall notice for these items.   Here is the complete product list from the United States recall:

Health Canada warns that Child Secure Seatbelt Vests and Toddler Child Car Booster Seats may pose an injury hazard

  • Toddler Child Car Booster Seat

They were sold in different colours online at joygeneralstore.com and may have also been sold through other online marketplaces.

Issue

Health Canada has determined that the use of these restraints in a motor vehicle could increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision. 

These products do not display Transport Canada’s National Safety Mark and therefore have not been certified to meet the safety requirements of the Motor Vehicle Restraint Systems and Booster Seats Safety Regulations.

The use of these restraints in a motor vehicle would be considered illegal under provincial and territorial highway regulations.

What you Should Do

Consumers who have these affected products should immediately stop using them and safely dispose of the items in such a way that they cannot be used again.

Regularly check the Healthy Canadians Recalls and Safety Alerts database for dangerous products and take action to remove items of concern.

Health Canada would like to remind consumers to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of these products or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.

What is Being Done

Based on the information available to Health Canada, the product poses a danger to human health or safety to consumers due to risk of injury in the event of a motor vehicle collision.

The product has been removed from sale online from the website joygeneralstore.com. Health Canada has contacted Joy General Store CA and is advising Canadians to immediately stop using these restraint systems in motor vehicles.

To date, no incidents or injuries related to this product have been reported to Health Canada.
